Prayer Vigil for Nelson Mandela Held in Christ Church Cathedral

A prayer service for the former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, took place in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, this evening, June 20, at 7.00 pm. The service was initiated by the South African Ambassador, His Excellency Jeremiah Ndou, the Dean of Christchurch Cathedral, the Very Reverend Dermot Dunne and the CEO of Spirit Radio, Rob Clarke.

The service drew people from all over Dublin City and was attended by a representative of the Lord Mayor as well as the new Ethiopian Ambassador to Ireland.

Dean Dunne stated: “As people, communities, organisations and countries come together to pray for this venerable personality who has been a torchlight of knowledge and an example of outstanding character and values, Christ Church has invited all friends and neighbours to come and join them to sing, speak, light candles and pray collectively, as one for Nelson Mandela”.

MC for the service was Spirit Radio presenter, Ronan Johnston. The South African Ambassador gave the latest health update for Nelson Mandela and spoke about Mandela’s role in bringing about both change and reconciliation in South Africa as well as his global leadership and influence.

The Cathedral’s Dean led prayers for Nelson Mandela, honouring the example he has given the world and praying for him at this critical moment in his life. He also prayed for his family and the people of South Africa, that they may continue the great journey of nation building that they have begun.

Music was led by No Limits and CEO of Spirit Radio, Rob Clarke, shared reflections of the readings (Joshua 1:1–9 and Hebrews 12: 12–15, Gospel Reading – Matt 5:1–10).
The service concluded with a rendition of the South African National Anthem.

The prayer service took place after a special Evensong for Madiba in the cathedral.
