David Martin – Looking Forward to Continuing his Journey as Intern Deacon in Howth

On Sunday September 21 five new Deacons will be ordained in Christ Church Cathedral. They are Kevin Conroy, David Martin, Alan Breen, Abigail Sines and Cathy Hallissey and they will be Intern Deacons in parishes in Dublin and Glendalough where they will work until next summer. Each has written a piece about themselves and each day this week
they will be profiled in turn.

David Martin (St Mary’s, Howth)

Originally a County Down man, David Martin (pictured with his family) has lived in Dublin now for almost as long as he spent growing up in Ballywalter. After reading Theology and English Literature in TCD he headed for London to complete the Cornhill Training Course, a year long programme aimed specifically at teaching people how to teach the Bible.

From there David found himself working as an assistant minister in a small church in Greenwich CT, USA for two years, only to be called home again in 2004 to begin working for Irish Church Missions in a new start–up church in Dublin city centre. It has been there, for the last ten years, that he has enjoyed the great privilege of seeing God at work in lives and in the growing community of Immanuel Church Dublin.

It was also during this time that his high school sweet heart agreed to be his wife! Honor, a keen sailor, arborist and general out doors enthusiast decided to marry her opposite! In God’s providence they have come to appreciate the wonderful diversity of marriage and now enjoy family life too with three lively children, Caleb(6), Abigail(4) and Clara (19mths).

It is with his three children that David has discovered new hobbies, like dressing–up as pirates, spying on insects and building rockets to the moon. David says, “I’m hoping to gain many helpful tips towards this end whilst working in St. Mary’s!”.

“I am very much looking forward to being part of the life of the church come September and pray that we will all together be mutually strengthened to continue following Jesus and find great joy in believing,” he adds.
