Commenting on the series, the TCD Dean of Residence, the Revd Darren McCallig, said: “Franz Kafka wrote that a great book is ‘an ice–axe to break the sea frozen inside us.’ With the help of distinguished and insightful visiting speakers we will explore some of those pieces of literature – whether poetry or prose, fiction or non–fiction – which shock us from our sleep and jolt us into new consciousness and new life. It promises to be a fascinating and thought–provoking series.”

The full list of visiting speakers is as follows: Eileen Dunne, broadcaster and presenter of ‘The God Slot’ on RTÉ Radio 1 (5 October); Eleanor McEvoy, award–winning singer/songwriter (19 October); Melanie Verwoerd, Executive Director of Tremendous Hearts and former South African ambassador to Ireland (2 November); Katherine Zappone, Independent Member of Seanad Éireann and Co–Director of the Centre for Progressive Change (16 November) and Michael Harding, playwright, novelist and Irish Times columnist (30 November). The TCD Dean of Residence, the Revd Darren McCallig, will preach on the other Sundays (28 September, 12 and 26 October, 9 and 23 November and 7 December).

All the addresses will be given in the context of the Sunday morning Choral Eucharist at 10.45am. All are welcome. Ten copies of each speaker’s chosen piece of literature will be distributed free of charge during the series. Further details and recordings of the addresses will be available on the TCD Chaplaincy website: www.tcd.ie/chaplaincy
