Archbishop of Dublin expresses sympathy on the death of President Hillery

Responding to the news of the death of the former President of Ireland, Patrick Hillery the Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Revd Dr John Neill said:

“I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of former President of Ireland, Patrick Hillery. I knew him from my time as Bishop of Tuam, Killala and Achonry, during which he made many visits to the West of Ireland, and I always had the warmest regard for him personally and for his wife, Maeve.

He had a distinguished career as a TD, Government Minister, EU Commissioner and as President, but what I will remember most about him was his quiet dignity and his commitment to public service for its own sake.

I would urge people to remember his family in their prayers and to give thanks to God for the gift that was President Hillery’s selfless contribution to Irish public life.”
