Part-time Musical Director of St George and St Thomas (incorporating Discovery Gospel Choir)
St George and St Thomas’ Church of Ireland Church in conjunction with the Discovery Gospel Choir are seeking applications for the part-time position of Musical Director.
Founded in June 2004, the Discovery Gospel Choir is Ireland’s first integrated Gospel choir. With members from Ireland, Haiti, South Africa, England, France, Sudan, China, Nigeria, Burundi, Cameroon, Uganda and Zimbabwe, the choir represents a rich diversity of backgrounds. The choir is based in St George and St Thomas’s Church of Ireland Church, Cathal Brugha Street, Dublin 1 and has a strong philosophy of reconciliation, development and integration based on Christian values.
We have performed at a wide range of events from Mountjoy prison to the Meteor Music awards and the MAMA awards to this year’s Electric Picnic. We have a diverse repertoire including African Gospel Music, Irish Traditional Music and Contemporary Gospel.
We are looking for a motivated individual who shares our ethos and who has a strong background in music – someone who can build our abilities, continue to inspire and motivate us, share our enthusiasm and take us forward to new levels of achievement.
This job is a part-time position (20 hours per week). 75% (15 hours) of this time will be devoted to the Discovery Gospel Choir and the remaining 25% (5 hours) will be spent developing the music ministry in St George and St Thomas’ Church.
Duties will include:
Discovery Gospel Choir
Auditions
Conduct auditions for existing and potential new members.
Rehearsals
Run rehearsals.
Teach music and choreography to choir members.
Continually improve the Choir’s performance standards.
Repertoire
Coordinate gathering of new music.
Encourage choir members to contribute to repertoire.
Organise and catalogue the Choir’s repertoire.
Produce and distribute learning materials to Choir members.
Performances
Assess requests and organise bookings for Choir performances.
Choose musicians/singers and items for performances.
Organise booking of external musicians.
Establish and strengthen links in music industry and wider musical world.
Education
Foster the development of Choir members’ musical and performance abilities.
Organise musicianship, singing, instrument and dance/movement lessons where possible.
St George and St Thomas’
Organise musical performances in worship life of the church in conjunction with church organist.
To choose and rehearse appropriate material for the Gospel Eucharist services on the third Sunday in the month.
To encourage the parish choir to grow, to introduce new music and reintroduce some traditional Anglican music for Morning Prayer on the last Sunday of the month.
To prepare the choir for special services at Christmas, Easter and Harvest.
Contribute musically to the social outreach of the church.
