Grafton Street 'Tented Village' to House Sleep Out and Fast for Haiti

Shoppers and late night revellers in Dublin's Grafton Street will see a 'tented village' on the top of the street on Friday-Saturday next housing around 40 people undertaking a 24 hour fast and sleep out to raise money for the survivors of the earthquake in Haiti.

The 40 people are a group of friends based around CORE Church, Thomas Street, in Dublin (although not all of them are Churchgoers) and they will be starting their fast and sit out at 8pm on Friday 19 February and continuing until 8pm on Saturday 20 February. The objective is to raise money for the work of Tearfund Ireland (see note after press release) and to show solidarity with those affected by the earthquake.

According to one of the organisers, the Revd Rob Jones, Curate of CORE, "With over two hundred thousand people dead and over a million homeless it is hard to understand the magnitude of the disaster in Haiti. Through a very small gesture of inconvenience we are trying to engage with and appreciate their suffering and at the same time raise desperately needed finance. All those involved in the event want the beneficiaries of our efforts to know that we are aware of their hardship and stand with them."
