Search Colloquium to Focus on Re–Ordering Liturgical Space
Search Journal is organising a colloquium entitled ‘Re–Pitching the Tent: Re–Ordering the Church Building for Worship and Mission’. The event, which is being run with the Church of Ireland Chaplaincy at Trinity College Dublin with the support of Ecclesiastical Insurance takes place in the Long Room Hub of TCD on Saturday April 18 from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm.
The keynote speaker will be Richard Giles (pictured), a facilitator in creative worship and a consultant in liturgical design. Other speakers include Thomas Gordon, Dean of Leighlin Cathedral; Michael Burrows, Bishop of the United Dioceses of Cashel, Waterford, Lismore, Ossory, Ferns and Leighlin; and Margaret Quinlan an award winning conservation architect working in Ireland.
Richard Giles holds degrees in town planning and theology. As canon theologian for the Diocese of Wakefield, he worked extensively with parishes to rethink and redesign their buildings as part of mission strategy. His particular expertise in the design of liturgical space bore fruit in the publication of Re–Pitching the Tent, now in its third edition. From 1999 to 2008, as Dean of Philadelphia Cathedral, he oversaw the radical renovation of the cathedral to become a place of transformative worship. In 2008 he became a Visiting Fellow of St John’s College, Durham. He continues to work as a facilitator of creative worship and a consultant in liturgical design.
