Refugee Housing Appeal – 40 People Have a Place to Call Home This Christmas

Dublin & Glendalough’s Refugee Housing Appeal was launched this time last year and the dioceses have pledged to raise €300,000 over three years. To date we have raised over €65,000 for the project and as we travel through Advent towards Christmas, parishes and organisations are pledging their support for the project.

The Irish Refugee Council (IRC) project is providing ‘next step’ transitional accommodation and holistic support for people emerging from Ireland’s Direct Provision system. This is a pilot project and the IRC is also working with the Association of Missionaries and Religious in Ireland (AMRI).

So far the IRC has acquired 10 properties from AMRI and 40 people have moved to their new homes from Direct Provision. Eighteen children have a place to call home and one baby girl has been born to a family in their new home. It has provided support to over 100 others and the project is only in its infancy.

IRC staff work with the people to ensure that they not only have a roof over their heads but that they are linked to support services, education, employment and are able to make social connections. The IRC is documenting all the work on this pilot so that others can learn from the work they are doing.

To contribute to the appeal monies can be forwarded by cheque to: the
