The Revd Gary Hastings has been appointed Canon Treasurer of Christ Church Cathedral. Gary is Rector of Holy Trinity, Killiney, and takes up the post in succession to Canon Robert Deane, former Rector of Swords, Donabate and Kilsallaghan, who retired in June.

Commenting on the appointment, Archbishop Michael Jackson said he was delighted that Gary had accepted the invitation to become Canon Treasurer. “The Revd Gary Hastings is a priest of considerable experience and compassion. He has contributed in a very sustained way to the life of church and community in the West of Ireland and has enriched the Church of Ireland’s understanding of her heritage in spirituality, liturgy and the Irish language,” he stated.

The appointment was also welcomed by the Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, the Very Revd Dermot Dunne. “I am very happy with the decision of the archbishop to appoint Gary Hastings to the Chapter of the cathedral in the capacity of Canon Treasurer. Gary has a rich and varied experience in ministry and has achieved so much in the serving of his titles across the church. I will welcome his support and wisdom in the life of the cathedral both at chapter and board level. Gary will be a great asset to the foundation and I look forward to working with him,” he said.

Gary said he was looking forward to taking up his new role. “I am surprised and delighted to be invited by the Archbishop to be Canon Treasurer of Christ Church. I am really looking forward to working with the Cathedral community in this new role in a new diocese,” he commented.

Gary was instituted Rector of Holy Trinity Killiney on April 20 last. He was formerly Rector of the Galway and Kilcummin Group and St Nicholas Collegiate Church, and Archdeacon of Tuam. Prior to his ordination, he taught in the Irish Studies Department of the University of Ulster. He is married to Caitriona. He has a keen interest in ecumenism and interfaith engagement as well as the Irish language and traditional music.
