The Feast of Candlemas was celebrated in Christ Church Cathedral this evening (Sunday February 3) with a special Candlemas Procession.

The feast day marks the presentation of Jesus in the Temple. He was offered to the Father and shown to his people. His mother was purified according to the custom of the time. Simeon and Anna recognised him as their Lord.

The service, which was led by Dean Dermot Dunne, was in two parts. A candle–lit vigil was kept recalling in readings and music the journey to the Temple culminating with the Candlemas Gospel. In the procession which concluded the service, the congregation’s lit candles were a sign of the promised Christ.
