POSTPONED – Beckett in Foxrock 2020 – Tullow Church

Tullow Parish and Mouth on Fire Theatre Company have taken the decision to POSTPONE Krapp’s Last Tape & Beckett’s Letters (extracts) as a result of the coronavirus situation. Saturday 28th March at 8pm Tullow Church, Brighton Road, Foxrock

Krapp’s Last Tape and Samuel Beckett’s Letters are linked together by their strong local connection in a double bill for this year’s Beckett in Foxrock production. In the play (“Beckett’s one–act masterpiece” The Telegraph), Krapp wistfully calls to mind his writing life, his lost loves, his mother and remembers attending church but drifts off to sleep and falls off the pew. The pew that Beckett would remember was in Tullow Church where the play will be performed – they promise the audience will not fall asleep!

Regarded as one of the 20th century’s greatest correspondents, Beckett often reminisced about the landscape of his youth: Foxrock, Stepaside, Killiney and Wicklow. “Wicklow Mountains more beautiful than ever” (to Louis Le Brocquy); “when I can’t sleep I play a round at Carrickmines.” (Golf Club)

Veteran Abbey actor and star of Ros na Rún, Macdara Ó Fátharta plays Krapp, on his 69th birthday listening back to the tape he made on the same day thirty years earlier, while Game of Thrones and Fair City actor Deirdre Monaghan will bring to life extracts from some of Beckett’s many letters where he remembers Dublin and Ireland.

Directed by Cathal Quinn, Artistic Director of Mouth on Fire and head of Voice at The Lir, TCD, the production also features keynote speaker Dr Feargal Whelan.

Beckett in Foxrock 2020 is the fifth annual event honouring the writer’s close connection with the Foxrock area.

Samuel Beckett, Nobel Laureate, was born and brought up in Foxrock and was a regular attender, along with his mother, at Tullow Church. A commemorative plaque was unveiled in 2016 by Beckett’s niece.

Tickets €30 include a wine reception and photographic exhibition showing the many links between Beckett’s work and the Foxrock area.
