Reflection from the Archbishop of Dublin on the 75th anniversary of VE Day

May 8 1945 marked the end of the Second World War in Europe. On the evening of the 75th anniversary of VE Day Archbishop Michael Jackson offers a short reflection.

Sacrifice in the service of peace is something throughout history that we ought to acknowledge with gratitude.

Today, throughout the world, people who are beneficiaries of the peace that eventually came to pass through World War II remember in sombre gratitude those who enabled peace to happen 75 years ago.

Mindful of both Irish neutrality and of the fact that some 70,000 Irish people fought in the Second World War, we commemorate on this day the self–sacrifice of all who fought for the hope of peace.
