THE ASCENSION DAY – EVENING PRAYER

Thursday 21 May 2020

PREPARATION

PENITENCE

All say

Heavenly Father,

we have sinned against you and against our neighbour

in thought and word and deed,

through negligence, through weakness,

through our own deliberate fault;

by what we have done

and by what we have failed to do.

We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ who died for us,

forgive us all that is past;

and grant that we may serve you in newness of life

to the glory of your name. Amen.

Merciful Lord,

grant to your faithful people pardon and peace,

that we may be cleansed from all our sins,

and serve you with a quiet mind;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

VERSICLES AND RESPONSES

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Your throne has been established from of old;

you are from everlasting. Alleluia.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Blessed are you, Lord of heaven and earth,

to you be glory and praise for ever.

From the darkness of death you have raised your Christ

to the right hand of your majesty on high.

The pioneer of our faith, his passion accomplished,

has opened for us the way to heaven

and sends on us the promised Spirit.

May we be ready to follow the Way

and so be brought to the glory of his presence

where songs of triumph for ever sound:

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God for ever.

THE WORD OF GOD

A PSALM

Psalm 93

1 The Lord is king, he is robed in majesty;

   the Lord is robed, he is girded with strength.

He has established the world; it shall never be moved;

2   your throne is established from of old;

   you are from everlasting.

3 The floods have lifted up, O Lord,

   the floods have lifted up their voice;

   the floods lift up their roaring.

4 More majestic than the thunders of mighty waters,

   more majestic than the waves* of the sea,

   majestic on high is the Lord!

5 Your decrees are very sure;

   holiness befits your house,

   O Lord, for evermore.

1    Christ Jesus was revealed in the flesh  ♦

and vindicated in the spirit.

2    He was seen by angels  ♦

and proclaimed among the nations.

3    Believed in throughout the world,  ♦

he was taken up in glory.

4    This will be made manifest at the proper time  ♦

by the blessed and only Sovereign,

5    Who alone has immortality,  ♦

and dwells in unapproachable light.

To the King of kings and Lord of lords  ♦

be honour and eternal dominion. Amen.

and taken up in glory.

A READING

Acts 1: 1–11

1In the first book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus did and taught from the beginning until the day when he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. After his suffering he presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over the course of forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. While staying with them, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the Father. ‘This’, he said, ‘is what you have heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.’

So when they had come together, they asked him, ‘Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?’ He replied, ‘It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.’ When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. While he was going and they were gazing up towards heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. They said, ‘Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up towards heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.’

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory

for ever and ever. Amen.
