SERVICE OF THE WORD – 31 MAY 2020

THE DAY OF PENTECOST

Preparation

GREETING

Christ is risen!

The Lord is risen indeed, alleluia!

SENTENCE OF SCRIPTURE

God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

Romans 5: 5

Opening Hymn: CH305 “O Breath of life, come sweeping through us”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QHZB_v0ZaY

O Breath of life, come sweeping through us,

revive your Church with life and power.

O Breath of life, come, cleanse, renew us,

and fit your Church to meet this hour.

O Wind of God, come bend us, break us,

till humbly we confess our need;

then in your tenderness remake us,

revive, restore, for this we plead.

O Breath of love, come breathe within us,

renewing thought and will and heart;

come, love of Christ, afresh to win us,

revive your Church in every part.

Revive us, Lord! Is zeal abating

while harvest fields are vast and white?

Revive us, Lord, the world is waiting,

equip your church to spread the light.

Elizabeth (Betty) A.P.Head (1850–1936)

INTRODUCTION

Jesus Christ, whom we worship, is our crucified, risen and ascended Lord

and we have walked with him through his journey of love.

We have faced the agony of his suffering and death on a cross.

We have rejoiced at his bursting free from the bonds of death.

We have enjoyed his risen presence with us

and his revelation of himself through the breaking of bread.

We have seen his return to the throne before which every knee shall bow

and every tongue confess that this Jesus is Lord.

And now, with the followers of his own time,

we await the coming of the promised Holy Spirit, his gift to his people,

through whom we make Christ known to the world.

RESPONSORY

As we wait in silence,

fill us with your Spirit.

As we listen to your word,

fill us with your Spirit.

As we worship you in majesty,

fill us with your Spirit.

As we long for your refreshing,

fill us with your Spirit.

As we long for your renewing,

fill us with your Spirit.

As we long for your equipping,

fill us with your Spirit.

As we long for your empowering,

fill us with your Spirit.

Silence is kept.

PENITENCE

Great and wonderful are your deeds,

Lord God the Almighty

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

You are the King of glory, O Christ.

Christ, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Come Holy Ghost, our souls inspire.

Lord, have mercy.

Lord, have mercy.

Hymn: CH307“Our great Redeemer, as he breathed”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHy0swVyLM0

Our great Redeemer, as he breathed

his tender last farewell,

a guide, a Comforter, bequeathed

with us to dwell.

He came in tongues of living flame

to teach, convince, subdue;

unseen as rushing wind he came –

as powerful too.

He comes his influence to impart –

a gracious, willing guest;

when he can find one humble heart

where he may rest.

And every virtue we possess,

and every victory won,

and every thought of holiness

are his alone.

Spirit of purity and grace,

our weakness, pitying see,

and make our hearts thy dwelling place

and worthier thee.

Harriet Auber (1773–1862) altd.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Almighty God,

who on the day of Pentecost

sent your Holy Spirit to the apostles

with the wind from heaven and in tongues of flame,

filling them with joy and boldness to preach the gospel:

By the power of the same Spirit

strengthen us to witness to your truth

and to draw everyone to the fire of your love;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Ministry of the Word

The First Reading:  Acts 2: 1–21

The reading below may be read, or an audio version listened to at

https://www.biblica.com/bible/niv/acts/2/

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God–fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

“‘In the last days, God says,

    I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

Your sons and daughters will prophesy,

    your young men will see visions,

    your old men will dream dreams.

Even on my servants, both men and women,

    I will pour out my Spirit in those days,

    and they will prophesy.

I will show wonders in the heavens above

    and signs on the earth below,

    blood and fire and billows of smoke.

The sun will be turned to darkness

    and the moon to blood

    before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

And everyone who calls

    on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

The Psalm: Psalm 104: 1,24, 29–30, 31, 34

Listen to and sing along with this Psalm at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH9g6NdGSds

Lord, send out your spirit and renew the face of the earth.

Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord, my God, you are great indeed! How manifold are your works, O Lord! The earth is full of your creatures.

If you take away their breath they perish and return to their dust. When you send forth your spirit they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.

May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord be glad in his works! Pleasing to him be my theme; I will be glad in the Lord.

The Second Reading:  1 Corinthians 12: 3b–13

The reading below may be read, or an audio version listened to at

https://www.biblica.com/bible/niv/1-corinthians/12/

Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: CH386 Spirit of God, unseen as the wind”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7Qi2O_u1YY

Spirit of God, unseen as the wind,

gentle as is the dove;

teach us the truth and help us believe,

show us the Saviour’s love.

You spoke to us long, long ago,

gave us the written word;

we read it still, needing its truth,

through it God’s voice is heard.

Without Your help we fail our Lord,

we cannot live His way;

we need your power, we need your strength,

following Christ each day.

Margaret Old (b. 1932)

The Gospel: John 20: 19–23

The reading below may be read, or an audio version listened to at

https://www.biblica.com/bible/niv/john/20/

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

COLLECT OF THE READINGS

O God,

who taught the hearts of your faithful people

by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit:

grant us by the same Spirit

to have a right judgement in all things,

and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort;

through the merits of Christ Jesus our Saviour,

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Response

APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

given us by the risen Lord.

We ask you to keep the whole Church, living and departed,

in the joy of eternal life.

Lord, come to bless us

and fill us with your Spirit.

Generous God,

you sent your Holy Spirit upon your Messiah at the river Jordan,

and upon the disciples in the upper room:

in your mercy fill us with your Spirit,

hear our prayer,

and make us one in heart and mind

to serve you with joy for ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Being made one by the power of the Spirit,

let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come,

thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory

for ever and ever. Amen.

Dismissal

Benediction Hymn: CH639 “O thou who camest from above”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3UYybc7Xa0

O thou who camest from above,

the pure celestial fire to impart,

kindle a flame of sacred love

on the mean altar of my heart.

There let it for thy glory burn

with inextinguishable blaze,

and trembling to its source return

in humble prayer and fervent praise.

Jesus, confirm my heart’s desire

to work, and think, and speak for thee;

still let me guard the holy fire,

and still stir up the gift in me.

Still let me prove thy perfect will,

my acts of faith and love repeat;

till death thy endless mercies seal,

and make the sacrifice complete.

Charles Wesley (1707–88)

May the Spirit kindle in us the fire of God’s love. Amen.
