Appointment of new Rector of Malahide, Portmarnock and St Doulagh’s announced
The Reverend Canon David Gillespie, Vicar of St Ann’s and Rector of St Stephen’s Churches, Dublin, has been appointed Rector of the United Parishes of Malahide, Portmarnock and St Doulagh’s, also in Dublin Diocese.
The announcement was made in both parishes today (Sunday August 29 2021). Canon Gillespie succeeds the Reverend Dr Norman Gamble who retired earlier this year after over 30 years as Rector.
Canon Gillespie grew up in Londonderry and before entering the Church of Ireland Theological College in 1999 was a journalist with Morton Newspapers in Portadown. He was made Deacon for the Parish of Agherton, Conor Diocese in 2001 and was Rector of Moy in Armagh Diocese before coming to Dublin in 2009.
David is married to Tanya who is Deputy Principal of St Andrew’s National School in Lucan.
Commenting on his appointment, Canon David said: “I have greatly enjoyed my time in St Ann’s and St Stephen’s Churches, not least my stint as Dublin’s Black Santa. They are two very special churches, with dedicated parishioners, which play an important part in the civic life of Dublin city and in the Church of Ireland in general. While leaving will be difficult, I am looking forward, very much, to ministry in north county Dublin. I would ask that the parishioners of both parishes keep Tanya and I in their prayers as we begin to make plans for the move.”
A date has yet to be set for the institution.
