Lambeth 2022 Day 11: Global character of Anglican Communion revealed through prayers for those living in danger
The Lambeth Conference is currently taking place with Anglican bishops from throughout the Anglican Communion gathering in Canterbury. The once in a decade conference brings together bishops from across the globe for prayer and reflection, fellowship, and dialogue on church and world affairs. Archbishop Michael Jackson is attending and will report back to Dublin & Glendalough. Below is his report from Day 11 of Lambeth 2022.
Saturday began with a Service of Holy Communion led by The Province of West Africa. Established in 1751, this Province is growing rapidly year by year and the countries it covers have a population of 350 million. It stands in the Anglo–Catholic tradition of mission and liturgy. Current discipleship priorities include the training of missionaries in French and in local languages to go to the tribal areas and to share the Gospel.
Statements of Support and invitations to pray for a number of Provinces and countries living under intense danger, exploitation and cruelty were read. They include Brazil and Kenya, the DRC and the Middle East, Ukraine and Sudan, Pakistan and South Sudan, Sri Lanka and Myanmar, Tanzania and The Indigenous Peoples of Canada and the world, those embroiled in mass shootings in USA, the refugee and migration crisis and the tiny Church in Afghanistan. The list gives a flavour of the global character of The Anglican Communion.
The Lambeth Call on Environment and Sustainable Development continued discussions begun in Lambeth Palace on Wednesday. The Call on Science and Faith is perhaps the most adventurous of all the Calls. It recognizes ahead of time that the next ten years will bring unprecedented changes to the ways in which science interacts with and regulates our lives.
At the conclusion of the session, Archbishop Welby awarded the degree DD (Lambeth) to Archbishop Josiah Idowu–Fearon outgoing Secretary General of the Anglican Communion for his services to Anglicanism and to inter Faith Dialogue. Archbishop Josiah was joined by his wife Comfort and all were delighted by this significant recognition of Josiah.
