Further Connections Between Anglicans in Spain and Dublin
Archbishop Michael Jackson has been in Madrid as part of the Porvoo Communion’s consultation. The business of the consultation has concluded and he is being shown around the Anglican diocese of Spain, which has strong connections with Dublin and Glendalough since its foundation, by Carlos López Lozano. Here the Archbishop reports on the final day of his visit.
During the times of General Franco, fourteen churches and twenty–six schools were seized by the army and never yet returned to the Spanish Episcopal Church. This is a deep memory in the lives of church members. At the same time certain municipalities and dioceses of the Roman Catholic Church have made space available.
We left SantIago early on Sunday morning heading in the direction of Salamanca. On the way we conducted Evening Prayer in a village where Archbishop Plunket (who was Archbishop of Dublin in the 1880s) had built the church. The parish now worships in the converted rectory.
From there we went to Salamanca where the bishop celebrated Holy Communion in a medieval church dedicated to St Thomas of Canterbury. It was a delight to have Dean Robert Willis preach at this service.
From Salamanca we continued our journey back to Madrid.
