‘Your presence makes this building come alive’ – Celebration of Cathedral Community
A joyous celebration of Christ Church Cathedral and its community took place on Friday evening (June 28). A wide range of individuals and groups associated with the many facets of the life of the Dublin cathedral were drawn together for a wonderful concert given by the Cathedral Choir, joined later by the cathedral’s Community Chorus. The concert was followed by a reception outside on the labyrinth.
The concert featured music ranging from Psalm 67 to ‘Danny Boy’ and from Charles Villiers Stanford’s ‘Three Motets’ to CHH Parry’s ‘Hear My Words’ concluding with a rousing encore of the Hallelujah Chorus.
The event was the brainchild of Christ Church’s Director of Music Tom Little who conducted the choirs. Organist James Short accompanied the music and the programme was supported by Tomos Watkins who conducts the Community Chorus.
The audience was welcomed by Dean Dermot Dunne who noted that they needed no welcome as they were all part of the cathedral community. “Your presence here makes this building come alive and you support the cathedral’s mission to be a place of welcome and worship,” he said.
He paid tribute to Tom Little for his work in developing the Cathedral Choir and bringing it out into the wider community. He also praised the Community Chorus, which draws its membership of about 100 people from right across the city of Dublin. He paid tribute to the team at the cathedral, headed up by CEO Susanne Reid
Later in the evening, Archbishop Michael Jackson congratulated the choir on a wonderful performance. He also congratulated the Dean who recently celebrated 40 years in ordained ministry. He said the Dean’s time in the cathedral had enabled it to be a place of joy and worship.
