Death of Canon Billy Marshall

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the death of the Revd Canon Dr William Marshall, who passed away peacefully on September 26 2025.
Canon Marshall served as Rector of Rathmichael from 1976 to 1992, and his ministry touched countless lives both locally and internationally. Originally from Co Tyrone, he was ordained in 1959. After serving in Ballyholme, Bangor during his early years, he dedicated a decade to missionary work in Chota Nagpur, India, with the Dublin University Mission. On his return to Ireland, he served as Assistant Chaplain at Trinity College Dublin between 1973–76. He became Incumbent of Rathmichael in 1976, the same year he completed his doctoral studies. His commitment to ecumenical dialogue and theological scholarship was evident throughout his life, notably in his doctoral work on the Church of North India and his leadership roles within the Church of Ireland, including Vice–Principal of the Theological College and Chancellor of Christ Church Cathedral.
Paying tribute to Canon Marshall Archbishop Michael Jackson said: “Canon William Marshall was much loved in the diocese and continues in our affection in death as in life.
“He served the diocese in a wide range of ways, notably as Chaplain of Trinity College and as incumbent of Rathmichael where he loved the parish and people. His contribution to theology and mission remain outstanding both in terms of the Church of Ireland Theological College and the Dublin University Mission to Chota Nagpur. Our sympathy is with Margaret and with members of his wider family.”
Rector of Rathmichael, the Revd Sean Hanily added: “For those of us in Rathmichael, we remember with gratitude his faithful service, pastoral care, and enduring legacy. His influence extended far beyond the parish, shaping theological thought and fostering unity across denominations. We give thanks for Canon Marshall’s life and ministry, and we hold his family and loved ones in our prayers”.
Requiem Eucharist will take place on Friday October 3 at 11.00am in Rathmichael Parish Church, Ferndale Road, Shankill, Dublin 18 followed by Committal Service at 3.15pm in the Victorian Chapel at Mount Jerome. Family flowers only please. Donations, if desired, to the Irish Red Cross. Clergy are welcome to robe (white stole).
