Listen Afresh to What God is Calling us to do – Year of Mission Begins on Advent Sunday
On Advent Sunday this year (November 30), parishes and church communities throughout Dublin and Glendalough are invited to join together in launching the Year of Mission in our United Dioceses.
The new Church year begins on Advent Sunday and for Dublin and Glendalough it will herald the beginning of a shared journey of renewal and purpose. Led by the Diocesan Mission Sub Committee, it will be a time to listen afresh for what God is calling us to be and to do. As the dioceses continues to focus on its mission, it is also an opportunity for people in every parish to engage with mission in their own settings.
All clergy and those who will lead services in the dioceses on Advent Sunday are encouraged to use a special Order of Service which has been prepared for the occasion by the Revd Ken Rue and the Revd Colin McConaghie.
The Year of Mission is rooted in prayer, flowing from the life of our Diocesan Prayer Movement, which continues to unite us in seeking God’s presence and direction. It is also shaped by consultation and collaboration, as we discern together how best to live out our faith in changing times.
Throughout this year, we are invited to reflect on what ‘mission’ means in our own contexts — in each of our parishes, our schools, and our daily lives — and how we might bear witness to Christ’s love with courage and compassion as together we find new ways of serving our neighbours and communities.
As we embark on this Year of Mission, we do so with gratitude for the faith that has sustained our dioceses over the years, and with anticipation for what God will do among us as we grow in discipleship and service, guiding us to be people of faith, hope and generosity.
Encouraging all parishes to take part in the Year of Mission and participate in its launch in their local services, Archbishop Michael Jackson has commended the work of the Mission Sub Committee.
“At the Dublin and Glendalough Diocesan Synods 2025 we were given a comprehensive introduction to the Year of Prayer and Mission,” he said. “In order to help parishes to embark on this, an Order of Service has been devised and is now being distributed with my authorization as Archbishop. The suggestion is that it be used on Advent Sunday, the beginning of the Christian Year. I commend the Service to you and also the Year of Prayer and Mission for our diocese and all our members that we may grow in faith and in the expression of that faith in our parishes and among our neighbours day by day.”
