Archbishop Michael Jackson has congratulated the Archdiocese of Dublin on the designation of St Mary’s as its Cathedral Church. Archbishop Dermot Farrell announced this morning (November 14), on the Feast of St Laurence O’Toole and the 200th anniversary of the dedication of the church, that Pope Leo XIV had consented to his request and decreed that St Mary’s be designated as the Cathedral Church of the Archdiocese of Dublin.

Archbishop Jackson this afternoon sent his good wishes to all involved in the life of the cathedral and to the Archdiocese.

“It is a great joy to me to learn of the granting of full cathedral status to St Mary’s Cathedral Dublin. ‘The Pro’ as it is affectionately known is dear to the hearts of countless people standing as it does in the heart of the contemporary city. It has been the location of many significant ecclesiastical and ecumenical events for us all as members of the Christian Church,” he commented.

The Archbishop added: “It is also significant that Pope Leo has made this announcement on the Feast of St Laurence O’Toole the Patron Saint of Dublin as in both Church of Ireland and Roman Catholic traditions we mark the eight hundredth anniversary of his canonization with visitors from Eu in Normandy. We wish Archbishop Farrell, Fr McDermott and all the clergy and people of the Archdiocese well on this happy day and noteworthy occasion”.
