Bishops’ Appeal Allocations
At its last meeting, the Bishops’ Appeal Advisory Committee made contributions totalling over €67,000 to a number of projects in Ethiopia, Uganda, and
Rwanda. They ranged from a project run by Tearfund to set up self-help groups to improve farming productivity, to providing the money to build a kitchen block at Vunga Vocati onal School in the diocese of Shyogwe, Rwanda. This school was visited by Canon Ian Poulton and Robbie Syme in 2009 and 2010 and building a kitchen will ensure that not only will the school be able to fulfil the requirement of the curriculum to teach nutrition and hygiene but will also enable the preparation of food for the students, most of whom leave home in the morning without having anything to eat.
A further Tearfund project that was supported aims to teach people in Uganda about combating and, all too frequently, living with AIDs. An Ethopian Christian Aid project that benefitted is providing small scale wind-powered irrigation schemes in agricultural areas, supporting a mobile veterinary service which vaccinates livestock and providing nets and boats to fishermen, all in an effort to reduce the population’s dependency on food aid.
Thank you to all the parishes that provided the money for these projects.
