MORNING PRAYER FOR USE ON SUNDAY – 28 JUNE 2020

THE THIRD SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY

The Gathering of God’s People

THE GREETING

Grace, mercy and peace

from God our Father

and the Lord Jesus Christ

be with you all

and also with you.

Hymn of Praise: CH52 “Morning has broken”

Listen to and sing along with this hymn at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZAsfB1Np-8

Morning has broken,

like the first morning;

blackbird has spoken

like the first bird.

Praise for the singing!

Praise for the morning!

Praise for them springing

fresh from the Word.

Sweet the rain's new fall

sunlit from heaven,

like the first dew-fall

on the first grass.

Praise for the sweetness,

of the wet garden,

Sprung in completeness

where his feet pass.

Mine is the sunlight!

Mine is the morning,

born of the one light

Eden saw play!

Praise with elation,

praise every morning,

God's re-creation

of the new day!

Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965)

INTRODUCTION

We have come together in the name of Christ

to offer our praise and thanksgiving,

to hear and receive God's holy word,

to seek the forgiveness of our sins,

and to pray for the needs of the world,

that by the power of the Holy Spirit

we may give ourselves to the service of God.

O Lord, open our lips,

and our mouth will proclaim your praise.

Let us worship the Lord.

All praise to his name.

Blessed are you, Sovereign God, Creator of all,

to you be praise and glory for ever.

You founded the earth in the beginning

and the heavens are the work of your hands.

In the fulness of time, you made us in your image,

and in these last days you have spoken to us

in your Son Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh.

As we rejoice in the gift of your presence among us

let the light of your love always shine in our hearts,

your Spirit ever renew our lives

and your praises ever be on our lips.

Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Blessed be God for ever.

PENITENCE

If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves,

and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins,

God is faithful and just

and will forgive our sins

and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1: 8-9

Let us confess our sins to God our Father.

O God, our loving Father in heaven,

we confess that we have sinned against you;

we have broken your commandments;

we have often been selfish,

and we have not loved you as we should.

For these, and all our sins, forgive us, we pray:

through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

May the Father of all mercies

cleanse you from your sins,

and restore you in his image

to the praise and glory of his name,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SENTENCES OF SCRIPTURE

Your word is a lantern to my feet

and a light upon our path. cf Psalm 119:105

O Lord, your word is everlasting:

it stands firm for ever in the heavens. cf Psalm 119: 89

Let us then receive the word of the Lord:

so may the light of your presence shine into our hearts.

Proclaiming and Receiving the Word

The First Reading: Jeremiah 28: 5-9

The reading below may be read, or an audio version listened to at

https://www.biblica.com/bible/niv/jeremiah/28/

Then the prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah before the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord. He said, ‘Amen! May the Lord do so! May the Lord fulfil the words you have prophesied by bringing the articles of the Lord’s house and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon. Nevertheless, listen to what I have to say in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people: from early times the prophets who preceded you and me have prophesied war, disaster and plague against many countries and great kingdoms. But the prophet who prophesies peace will be recognised as one truly sent by the Lord only if his prediction comes true.’

After the reading silence may be kept.

Responsory Hymn: CH381 “God has spoken - by his prophets”

Listen to and sing along with this hymn at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCpWU_NStr4

God has spoken - by His prophets,
spoken His unchanging Word,
each from age to age proclaiming
God, the one, the righteous Lord;
in the world's despair and turmoil,
one firm anchor holding fast:
God is King, His throne eternal,
God the first, and God the last.

God has spoken - by Christ Jesus,
Christ, the everlasting Son,
brightness of the Father's glory,
with the Father ever one:
spoken by the Word incarnate,
Life, before all time began,
Light of light to earth descending,
God revealed as Son of Man.

God is speaking – by his Spirit
speaking to our hearts again;
in the age-long word expounding
God's own message, now as then;
Through the rise and fall of nations
one sure faith is standing fast;
God abides, his word unchanging,
God the first, and God the last.

George W. Briggs (1875-1959)

based on Hebrews 1: 1-2

The Second Reading: Romans 6: 12-23

The reading below may be read, or an audio version listened to at

https://www.biblica.com/bible/niv/romans/6/

Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.

What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey – whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness. When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

After the reading silence may be kept.

Hymn before the Gospel: CH517 “Brother, sister, let me serve you” (vs 1-5)

Listen to and sing along with this hymn at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_ufwqwquqY

Brother, sister, let me serve you,

let me be as Christ to you.

Pray that I may have the grace to

let you be my servant, too.

We are pilgrims on a journey,

and companions on the road;

we are here to help each other

walk the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for you

in the night-time of your fear;

I will hold my hand out to you,

speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping;

when you laugh I'll laugh with you.

I will share your joy and sorrow

till we've seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven,

we shall find such harmony,

born of all we've known together

of Christ's love and agony.

Richard Gillard (b. 1953)

The Gospel Reading: Matthew 10: 40-42

https://www.biblica.com/bible/niv/matthew/10/

‘Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.’

After the reading silence may be kept.

COLLECT OF THE WORD

O God,

who has taught us

that those who give a cup of water in his name

will not lose their reward:

open our hearts to the needs of your children,

and in all things make us obedient to your will,

so that in faith we may receive your gracious gift,

eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Father, Son and holy Spirit.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Almighty and everliving God,

Lord, have mercy.

For the Church of Christ,

Lord, have mercy.

For this village and community,

For all who have found here a place of refuge,

for our neighbours and our friends,

For the good earth which God has given us,

and for the wisdom and will to conserve it,

let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

For the aged and infirm,

for those suffering from the Coronavirus or its aftermath,

and for all in any need,

let us pray to the Lord.

Lord, have mercy.

For the poor and the oppressed,

for prisoners and captives,

and for all who remember and care for them,

Lord, have mercy.

Rejoicing in the communion of all the saints,

let us commend ourselves,

and one another, and all our life, to God.

Silence is kept.

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit;

yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory,

now and for ever. Amen.

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Almighty God,

you have broken the tyranny of sin

and have sent the Spirit of your Son into our hearts

whereby we call you Father:

Give us grace to dedicate our freedom to your service,

that we and all creation may be brought

to the glorious liberty of the children of God;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER ABOUT THE CURRENT CRISIS

O God, whose love we cannot measure,

nor even number thy blessings:

we bless and praise thee for all thy goodness,

who in our weakness art our strength,

in our darkness, light,

in our sorrows, comfort and peace,

and from everlasting to everlasting art our God,

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, world without end. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Gathering our prayers and praises into one, we pray:

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours

now and for ever. Amen.

Closing Hymn: CH492 “Ye servants of God, your servants proclaim” (vs 1, 3-4)

Listen to and sing along with this hymn at:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ9j3e8_yQc

Ye servants of God, your master proclaim,

and publish abroad his wonderful name;

the name all-victorious of Jesus extol;

his kingdom is glorious, and rules over all.

Salvation to God, who sits on the throne!

Let all cry aloud, and honour the Son;

the praises of Jesus the angels proclaim,

fall down on their faces and worship the Lamb.

Then let us adore, and give him his right:

all glory and power, all wisdom and might,

all honour and blessing, with angels above,

and thanks never-ceasing, and infinite love.

Charles Wesley (1707-88)

based on Revelation 4: 9-11; 5: 11-14

THE DISMISSAL

Let us say together:

Be with us Lord,

as we go out into the world.

May the lips that have sung your praise

always speak the truth;

may the ears which have heard your Word

listen only to what is good

and may our lives as well as our worship

be always pleasing in your sight,

for the glory of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BLESSING

The God of hope

fill you with all joy and peace in believing;

and the blessing of God Almighty,

the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit,

be with you and remain with you always. Amen.

We go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

In the name of Christ. Amen.
